Will you be B&Q’s Gardener of the Year?

Gloves on, weeds out, B&Q’s Gardener of the Year competition is back. Another year, another tussle for the B&Q Golden Trowel. The gardening showdown returns with fresh categories, a new star judge and £10,000 up for grabs. This year, the judges want you to showcase your green fingers in four new categories. Do you think you’ve got what it takes to become B&Q Gardener of the Year?


The Classic Gardener

Do you pay attention to every element when caring for your garden? This category is for those who take time to source the perfect plants, consider texture and shape, and enhance every corner with contemporary additions.

The Productive Gardener

Do you work your garden hard? The productive gardener enjoys a harmonious space, with composters, bug hotels, and water butts – and produces fruit, veg, herbs, and cut flowers to bring into the home.

The Year-Round Gardener

Are you out in your garden come rain, shine or snow? This category is for those with a space that is thriving with flowering plants, incredible colours and interesting layers – abundance all year round.

The Eccentric Gardener

Does your garden embrace the unexpected and spark joy and intrigue in every corner? This gardener knows how to turn heads, whether it’s with rare plants or using creative ways to maximise every nook.

  • Dame Prue Leith (Food entrepreneur and garden enthusiast)
  • Matt Childs (Award-winning RHS garden designer)
  • Humaira Ikram (BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time and garden designer)
  • Steve Guy (B&Q Outdoor Director)

Last year’s winner

Gary McLaughlan, a firefighter from Sunderland was crowned the 2021 winner. Gary spent four years cultivating his 4.5 x 3.5m garden for his wife, Lindsay.

“I’m relatively new to gardening and still have a lot to learn, but this competition has most certainly shown that you don’t need a huge garden or bags of experience to create a uniquely beautiful outside space.”
