Known as La Celeste (The Sky Blue), Uruguay’s national football team has made 13 appearances in the FIFA World Cup. This year in Russia, they will be looking to take their third victory in the competition—the first two achieved in 1930 and 1950—with some help from their world-famous top scorer, Luis Suárez.
The base of Uruguayan cuisine is meat and animal products, its dishes are always accompanied by fresh bread and fried pastries. Maté and wine are both popular drinks.
Chivito, the national dish, consists of cooked beef steak, cheese, tomatoes, mayo, olives, bacon and eggs served as a sandwich in a bun.

4 thin beef steaks
4 sandwich bread rolls
4 slices pancetta
2 tbsp olive oil
4 lettuce leaves
2 tomatoes, sliced
4 slices queso blanco
1. Season beef. Split bread rolls and spread aioli on both halves. Set aside.
2. Heat an iron griddle, crisp the pancetta on it, turning once, and set aside. Add the steaks and cook without moving for 2 minutes on each side.
3. Heat olive oil in a frying pan and fry the eggs until the whites are cooked but the yolks are runny.
4. To serve, stack the lettuce, tomatoes, beef, bacon, queso blanco and egg in the bun and cover.
