The Top 10 Oscar Winning Movies of All Time?
04. West Side Story (1961)
With 10 wins, this colourful musical, based on the plot of Romeo and Juliet, wasn’t up against much competition for Best Picture – Fanny, The Guns of Navarone, The Hustler and Judgment at Nuremberg. Nevertheless this adaptation of the stage production with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim also scored for Best Director (Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins), Best Supporting Actor (George Chakiris), Best Supporting Actress (Rita Moreno), Best Cinematography and more. Little known fact – originally the stage musical was going to be called East Side Story.
03. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
With 11 wins, this culmination of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy won every category in which it was nominated, including best Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. Filmed and edited entirely in Peter Jackson’s native New Zealand, concurrently with the other two parts of the trilogy, it was highly acclaimed by both critics and audiences, who regarded it as a landmark in filmmaking and the fantasy film genre. It went on to gross $1.142 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2003 and the second highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release, and the highest-grossing film released by parent company Time Warner until it was surpassed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 in 2011.
