The Top 10 Oscar Winning Movies of All Time?

08. Gone with the Wind (1939)

Gone With the Wind – a damn winner

With eight wins, this epic of the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War features Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara, Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, Leslie Howard as Ashley Wilkes, and Olivia de Havilland as Melanie Hamilton. Filming was delayed for two years because of producer David Selznick’s determination to secure Gable for the role of Rhett Butler, and the “search for Scarlett” led to 1,400 women being interviewed for the part. The original director, George Cukor, was fired shortly after filming began and was replaced by Victor Fleming, who in turn was briefly replaced by Sam Wood while Fleming took some time off due to exhaustion. Though criticised for being too long at 221 minutes on its release, it became immensely popular, holding the record of highest-earning film for over 25 years.

Also on the slate with 8 Oscar wins are Slumdog Millionaire (2008),
Amadeus (1984), Gandhi (1982), Cabaret (1972) and My Fair Lady (1964).

It received 12 nominations at the 69th Academy Awards, winning nine, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche. It was also the first to receive a Best Editing Oscar for a digitally edited film. Ralph Fiennes, playing the title character, and Kristin Scott Thomas were also Oscar-nominated for their performances, and the British Film Institute ranked The English Patient the 55th greatest British film of the 20th century.
