With the news that time-travel movie Back to the Future is being turned into a stage musical, we wondered what other film favourites had made it to the stage – and whether they were triumphs or disasters. It’s one thing to turn a stage musical into a movie – just point a camera at the performers. But going the other way can be trickier – for a start, you have to write some catchy songs. 10: Sunset Boulevard – 1950

This classic directed by Billy Wilder had been made into a musical adaptation in 1993 and made it to London West End stage. It features lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton with music from musical theatre icon Andrew Llyod Webber. The film also made a further jump as it made it to Broadway where it received numerous Tony awards, which featured one for Glenn Close, in her role as the vain Norma Desmond.
