Planning is the key to stress-free travelling with children

Regardless of whether you are travelling by car or by plane, Wendy Shand, mum-of-three and owner of child-friendly travel specialist Tots To Travel, is a firm believer that the key to stress-free travelling with children is simply a matter of careful planning.

Car Journeys

  • It pays to be organised, so write a list and don’t leave packing until the last minute – it always takes longer than you think.
  • Pack plenty of toys, tiaras, cars, books – whatever it takes to keep your little ones entertained.
  • Prepare a bag of snacks and drinks that are easily accessible. Likewise, your nappy changing bag, pram and coats need to be easy to find when you stop for a break.
  • If you’re travelling a very long distance, consider driving overnight so your children can sleep for most of the journey.
  • Pack a picnic – youngsters will think it’s all part of the holiday fun.

  • Avoid unnecessary stress at the check-in by reading and digesting the details of your ticket and check-in procedure before you arrive at the airport.
  • If there are four of you flying then try and get seats on two rows – so an adult and a child sit together in each one. This can stop squabbles over window seats and give some one-on-one time too.
  • Make sure you put all essentials in your hand luggage including nappies, baby milk, plenty of wipes, change of clothes, snacks and comforters.
  • Pack surprises for the journey such as crayons, small toys or a disposable camera for little ones to record the journey.
  • Most importantly – focus on you and your family, not what other people are thinking.
