Dealing with a drug addict

When a loved one is a drug addict it can be very difficult for everyone around them. However, what can you do to help?

The addict often pushes away anyone who tries to help and it can seem nearly impossible to reach them. That is what makes a drug addict so difficult to help, they may insist that they are just fine. They will not accept they have a problem and often resent anyone who suggests they may need help.

This can cause a great deal of anger amongst people trying to help an addict. That is why it is important to remember that when someone has an addiction, they are not themselves. You are not having an argument with the person you love, you are having an argument with the drug.

If you are thinking of confronting someone about their drug problem, The Life Works Treatment Team advises the following few tips that will help make the conversation much smoother:

1. They did not choose to become a drug addict and you should not blame them for it.

2. Every addiction carries a lot of shame, so do not add to that.

3. Pick your moment, do not confront the drug addict when they are high, wait until they have come down and are thinking more clearly.

4. Show concern. Let them know that you are worried about them.

5. Be compassionate.

6. Offer evidence. Do not try to talk to a drug addict until you have concrete proof of their addiction. This makes it much harder for them to deny.

7. Suggest that they get professional help.

The most important thing to remember is that you can only do so much. The addict has to want to get better before they can start their recovery.
