Smokers who have not kicked the habit are now smoking more than ever

A new report released shows that although there has been a decline in the number of British smokers, those who have not yet kicked the habit are now smoking more than they did a year ago.
The report, put together by YouGov Sixth Sense, found that those who were less well off and those who live alone were most likely to have increased their cigarette intake.
Results showed that 14% of smokers who are financially less well off are now smoking more than they did before whilst it is estimated that singletons smoke 10% above the national average.
The increase in cigarettes smoked is thought to be a way of dealing with the stresses caused by the recession.
“We are getting a clear picture of the effect the recession has had on the nation’s health. It is now possible to identify those most sensitive to the changed in the recession” said James McCoy, Research Director for YouGov Sixth Sense.
However, on the positive side, the report also found that British people have decreased their intake in alcohol with 34% of participants saying that in the past year they have cut back on how much alcohol they consume.
“Overall the trend is away from smoking as most people are proving resistant to smoking’s lure as a convenient stress release” added James McCoy.
