From UV rays to noise pollution, here's why we need to protect our children's vital senses.

Why do babies & kids need sunglasses?

Children’s eyes are super delicate and, up until 8-9 years old, they don’t have a filter to block out UV light.

Did you know that behind tinted lenses, the iris opens up to allow more light in? If the lenses don’t protect properly, more UV light gets in, potentially causing damage. An inferior lens can do more harm than having no protection at all!

Just like how the sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause damage to your skin, it can also cause extensive damage, photoaging, and even cancer in your eyes. As a parent, you would always ensure your child had sun cream on before playing out in the sun, so why wouldn’t you protect their eyes too? It is so important to protect your children’s eyes—especially when they’re very young—to prevent permanent damage in the future.

As an adult, you’d think nothing of spending £50+ for a pair of cool-looking sunglasses. However, a child’s eyes are more vulnerable to damage from the sun than an adults' because the cornea, lens and fluids are clearer, allowing more light to reach the retina.

Exposure to UV light increases the risk of cataracts (the clouding of the lens), pinguecula (the thickening of the white of the eye) and pterygium (a growth over the surface of the cornea).

Therefore, sunglasses are vital for protecting babies and children from the sun’s harmful rays.

Protect your child’s future eye health with sunglasses!

Why do babies and kids need ear protection?

As a parent or carer, you don’t want to be restricted on where you go as a whole family; from weddings, sporting events, air shows, music festivals and loud family gatherings. However, the level of noise at these events can be harmful to your little one’s hearing.

Repeated exposure to anything over 85db for long periods can result in Noise Induced Hearing Loss.

More than a third of all hearing loss is attributed to noise and is completely preventable!

Baby & children’s ear defenders safeguard young ears from the environment and protect from Noise Induced Hearing Loss. They are designed to attenuate harmful loud noises without shutting out other ambient sounds. Some ear defenders are suitable for children from 3 months old—check the advice of the brand you are buying from, and ensure they are fully tested to current BSEN standards and are CE certified.

What is noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL)?
Noise Induced Hearing Loss is the loss of hearing that is caused by exposure to loud noises. The cochlea are damaged when exposed to loud noises. They can repair themselves, but only if a small amount of damage is done. However, repeated exposure to very loud noises can cause permanant damage. This is why it’s crucial to protect your child from an early age.

Can NIHL be prevented?

NIHL is definitely preventable with the right protection, so be aware of what noises can cause damage to little ears (those at or above 85 decibels).

City traffic, rock concerts, bulldozers, sirens and power mowers are all examples of noises over 85 decibels that, if exposed for a certain period of time, can cause damage to young ears.

Below is a list of common noises and their decibels:

  • Aircraft at take-off (180)
  • Fireworks (140)
  • Chain saw (110)
  • Amplified music (110)
  • Lawn mower (90)
  • Noisy office (90)
  • Vacuum cleaner (80)
  • City traffic (80)
  • Normal conversation (60)
  • Refrigerator humming (40)
  • Leaves rustling (10)
  • Calm breathing (10)
