Tory leader David Cameron has said his MP's must pay back expenses

Health Minister Phil Hope is to repay £41,709 from taxpayers for his second home
The Corby MP used the £41,709 from the taxpayers to furnish his second home, a ‘modest’ flat in South London. Items bought for the flat included a new kitchen, seven doors, wooden flooring, bedroom furniture and a £120 barbecue. Although the claims were within the rules for expenses, he says he’s repaying the money to restore voters faith in him, saying the stories about his expenses had caused a “massive blow” to his integrity.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Tory leader David Cameron clashed over MP’s expenses, as Mr Cameron says looking back on whether past rules were followed would not restore public trust.
The Tory leader has said his MPs must pay back excessive claims or face the sack. He has also called for the scrapping of the £10,000 yearly communications allowance given to MPs “so we can tell our constituents what a wonderful job we are doing”.
Mr Hope’s Labour colleague, Communities Secretary Hazel Blears has also given a cheque for £13,000, which she said was for avoided tax on the sale of a flat in South London.
Labour MP for Luton, Margaret Moran is to pay back £22,500 she spent on treating a property in Southampton for dry rot.
