The measures will help tenants who rent privately

The Government is planning to set up a website where tenants can post views on their landlord and accommodation to help improve the private rented sector
Users will be able to provide feedback on the website, as well as ringing a housing hotline which will offer advice to tenants, there is also a possible move to make written agreements between tenants and landlords a legal requirement. This would ensure that tenants are clear about their rights from the start of the contract.
John Healey, Housing Minister, said: ‘’Over three million families live in private rented housing and while the majority are happy with their homes and landlords, many do face problems. Every tenant should be confident in their decision to rent as well as be clear what to expect before they sign on the dotted line.”
A new National Landlord Register is also being launched so tenants can see how prospective landlords maintain their properties and how quickly they fix any faults. Additionally there will be tougher regulations to drive out rogue letting agents.
‘’That’s why I’m making information about the track record of landlords available to everyone and written tenancy agreements will mean all tenants are clear about their rights from the outset.’’
Under new changes students and seasonal workers will be included as having tenancy rights, providing protection for a further 150,000 people.
