Businesses crack down on World Cup staff absences
Businesses will also be monitoring computer use to ensure staff aren't watching online

World Cup fever may be sweeping over the country but few businesses are allowing their employees to watch the tournament during working hours

A survey, conducted by BDRC Continental in May 2010, showed that the recession appears to be taking its toll as employers were much more willing to get into the spirit of the 2006 World Cup.

More than half of those surveyed responded that they expect business as usual and will remind employees of the disciplinary procedures that they should expect if they were to break the rules.

Shiona Davies, BDRC Continental Director, commented “There has been a noticeable change among Britain’s bosses since the survey was last conducted in 2006, with employees less likely to allow staff to watch the game and more likely to make checks on absenteeism.”

The survey showed that, on the other hand, the bosses who appreciate the beautiful game are more likely to make exceptions and allow their staff members to bring in televisions and radios. However, they are also more likely to anticipate a loss in productivity throughout the month-long World Cup.
