The number of breast cancer survivors is on the rise, new research has found
France’s International Prevention Research Institute completed a study of 30 countries and found that breast cancer deaths in the UK had dropped by about a third since the 1980’s.
Breast cancer death rates in the UK are now thought to be 28.2 per 100,000 – equivalent to 12,000 deaths per year.
The researchers have said that the falls could be attributed to the faster diagnosis and higher level of care given to patients.
Dr Caroline Hoffman, Clinical Director and Research Co-ordinator from The Haven, said, ‘We welcome the news that death rates have fallen in the UK.’
However, the government have commented that although this is positive news, more progress still needs to be made.
Spain was found to have the lowest death rate at 18.9 per 100,000 people diagnosed.
